so i went to put on my winters today. The guy at the shop where I bought them said the lip on the steel rims is different from the stock wheel so I needed new lug nuts. Well they don't 'thread on to my lugs. The thread on the new nuts didn't look as tight as my stock nuts.I was kinda surprised to see a different thread pattern. Is this for real? I'm going back to exchange them tomorrow.

Guess they

(puts on sunglasses)

Grabbed the wrong set of nuts

Cheesiness aside, they probably gave you the wrong ones. Different makes have different pitches on their studs I guess.

Why do people change their rims in the winter. Is it to protect the actual wheels from the salt? I'm in SoCal so I've never needed to think about winter tires.

Because repeatedly mounting and dismounting tires from the wheel is an expensive process and not good for the health of the tire.

So you don't have to demount tires. That isn't the best for them.

This is surprising because the vast majority of wheels have conical seats. I've yet to see a modern set of wheels that doesn't use them. And especially since they gave you lug nuts with the incorrect thread pitch, I would seriously reconsider seeking their services again.

Thanks, I've always wondered that.

it does have a conical end but maybe a different pitch?

My Dad's Yaris had the same issue. He uses the factory steel wheels in winter, and bought a set of used factory Yaris alloys for summer. Even though both wheels sets are original equipment, he still needed a different set of nuts for the alloys.

I can't remember if it was due to having different conical seat angles, or if the alloys had flat or ball seats.

What everyone else said and it was only like $50 more to go down one size and get wheels and tires. I figured I'd will be a selling point when I go to sell out too. .. but that's long down the road

Polished aluminum gets pitted all to shit when exposed to salt water. It's an all-day project to get the shine back. Also, winter means potholes and bent rims. Steelies are tougher and disposable.

This is one winter's exposure to salt:

Nice patina, huh? It's also bent.
